The mayor of Kansas City (the one in Missouri, not Kansas) is living up to his name.
Major Sly James is leading the charge to land Amazon’s new headquarters for KCMO. The deadline is just one week away (October 19) and no doubt the internet giant is being deluged by applications from locales that would love to land a project that promises to spend $5 billion for construction and hire up to 50,000 people.
But how to stand out among the bidders?
Yesterday, James launched a campaign on Amazon’s home turf: its product customer reviews. James explained the gambit in this video:
What's the best way to get Amazon excited about a new KC HQ? Amazon product reviews. Tell Amazon why you love KC with #KC5stars. http://pic.twitter.com/kD9lPnwywb

To make it all legit, he’s actually buying the products that are reviewed, and donating them to charity.
I bought 1,000 products for charity on Amazon and reviewed them all with a little KC love. Read all my reviews at https://t.co/fXuxqnmp3v http://pic.twitter.com/JBLHyiE51P

So far, James (or, quite possibly, the world’s greatest social media intern) has posted almost 90 product reviews in which he quickly pivots to talking up the virtues of Kansas City:
And of course he’s cross-promoting these reviews on Twitter:
Here’s another 5 star Amazon review from a 5 star city for Amazon HQ2. Tell Amazon why you love KC with #KC5Stars http://pic.twitter.com/ORTaH3E98V

Hey @CityOfRaymoreMO let's tell @amazon why the KC Metro Area is the best place to live! http://pic.twitter.com/VV936oE5Dy

Will it actually make a difference? Probably not. But the man is clearly having fun and making a good case that the Kansas City region is the best, most obvious choices for Amazon. (Conflict disclosure: I grew up in the Kansas City region.)
“It’s no secret we believe Amazon is a great fit for Kansas City,” James said in a written statement given to the Kansas City Star. “So the idea was easy — make Kansas City the most well-reviewed city on Amazon.”
