After 14 years, World of Warcraft can still draw a crowd.
With 3.4 million in day-one sales, Battle for Azeroth is the fastest-selling World of Warcraft expansion yet, Activision Blizzard announced today.
Released on August 14, Battle for Azeroth is World of Warcraft's seventh expansion pack since the MMO's 2004 launch. The expansion pack, which introduces new regions and new playable races, costs $49.99 for the standard edition and $69.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition.
Blizzard claims Battle for Azeroth is one of the fastest-selling PC games of all time based on its internal data and reports from some game distributors. It did not, however, provide any of that data or put a number on how many copies of Battle for Azeroth have been sold after its record-breaking launch day.
“Battle for Azeroth is a definitive chapter in the Horde and Alliance conflict at the heart of Warcraft," said Blizzard Entertainment CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime in a prepared statement. "And it’s been thrilling to see players representing their factions in record numbers and embarking on their war campaigns — not to mention joining in ourselves.”
IGN's Battle for Azeroth review is still a work-in-progress, but our reviewer's initial impressions were that the new War Mode is to be "one of the best changes" in the expansion. And while the in-game event that preceded Battle for Azeroth's release divided fans, our reviewer found that it set up events that further invested him in the story.
